What happens if your IELTS result is delayed or withheld?
Quick answer
It is held back for extra checks before release. IDP lists four reasons: further validation of the test, random quality checks, suspected malpractice or an irregularity, and technical issues. You may be asked for Writing and Speaking samples, or, in exceptional cases, to retake a component. Contact your test centre, and watch your email.
Part of The IELTS test, answered
A result is withheld when it is held back for extra checks before release. The steps below come from IDP’s pages on delayed and withheld results, which quote the IELTS Test Terms and Conditions.
Why a result is withheld
IDP says results may occasionally be withheld beyond the standard release time so that additional checks can be made, to protect results that more than 13,500 institutions rely on. It lists four common reasons:
- additional validation of the test performance;
- random quality assurance checks;
- suspected malpractice or a test irregularity;
- technical issues that need investigating.
IDP’s Canada page names the two most frequent in plain terms: IELTS needs to check your test again, or it is running quality checks on how the test was run. Neither is a finding against you.
What the terms allow
The IELTS Test Terms and Conditions are part of what you accept when you book. IDP quotes clauses 5.10 and 5.11: the IELTS partners may withhold or cancel a result if there are concerns about the reliability of the outcome or a suspected breach of testing policy. Under those terms, you may be asked for Writing and Speaking samples to help a review, and, in exceptional cases, to retake one or more components. A result can also be cancelled after it has been issued if an irregularity is found.
What to do
- Contact your test centre. It is the only place that can explain your own case.
- Watch your email. IDP says IELTS will email you if a result is withheld or cancelled. Check your spam folder and your account for updates.
- Plan around the wait. IELTS publishes no fixed time for a review. If a deadline is close, you can book another test, and if you end up with two results, IDP says you can choose which to use.
For the normal release times by format, see when IELTS results come out.
If an investigation follows
IDP says that if a result is withheld after an investigation, you can ask Cambridge English to reconsider it within 21 days, and that Cambridge English sets out the steps on its own website. Ask your test centre for the link that applies to your test, because the conditions are Cambridge’s, not the test centre’s.
Avoiding a deadline crisis
IDP’s advice is to book a test a few months before you need the result. IDP says results are withheld only occasionally, but a review has no published end date, so a margin is the only protection against one.
What this means for your score
You sit IELTS on computer and the published window passes with no result. An email says the result is withheld for review. You contact the test centre the same day, keep checking your email and your spam folder, and, because an application closes in three weeks, you book a second test as a fallback.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a withheld IELTS result take?
IELTS publishes no fixed time. IDP says delays are resolved as quickly as possible, but that timelines vary with the nature of the review. That is why IDP advises booking a test a few months before any deadline. Your test centre is the only place that can tell you how your own review is going.
Does a withheld result mean I am accused of cheating?
No. Suspected malpractice is one of four reasons IDP lists, beside further validation of the test, random quality checks and technical issues. A random check can withhold a result that has nothing wrong with it. The notice you receive, and your test centre, are where you find out which applies to you.
Can a result be cancelled after it has been issued?
Yes. IDP says a result may be cancelled after it is issued if an irregularity is identified, and that you may be asked to retake one or more components. The IELTS Test Terms and Conditions, which you accept when you book, allow the IELTS partners to withhold or cancel a result in these cases.
Can I sit IELTS again while I wait?
Yes. IDP says that if you do not want to wait, or cannot, you can take the test again. If you end up with two sets of results, you can choose which one to use, so a second booking is a fallback, not a risk to the first result.
